GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Ocularist: An ocularist is a carefully trained technician skilled in the arts of fitting, shaping, and painting ocular prosthetics. In addition to creating it, the ocularist shows the patient how to handle and care for the prosthesis and provides long-term care through periodic examinations.
Apprentice: An apprentice is a member of the International Academy of Ocularists (IAO) who is actively training in the fitting and fabrication of ophthalmic prostheses under the sponsorship of a Fellow of the International Academy of Ocularists (FIAO).
Ophthalmologist: An ophthalmologist is a physician who specializes in the care of eyes. They intricately understand the potential diseases and defects of eyes and are trained in medical and/or surgical treatment of these diseases and defects.
Optician: An optician is someone who fills prescriptions for ophthalmic lenses, dispensing spectacles, and making and fitting contact lenses.
Optometrist: An optometrist is a person who is professionally trained and licensed to examine the eyes for visual defects, diagnose problems or impairments, and prescribe corrective lenses or provide other types of treatment.
Conformer: A conformer is a clear acrylic form used following enucleation, evisceration, and socket reconstruction.
Enucleation: Enucleation is the complete surgical removal of the eyeball.
Evisceration: Evisceration is the surgical removal of the contents of the eyeball with retention of the sclera or cornea and sclera.
Implant: An implant is a device made of plastic or other material. It is surgically inserted during the enucleation of the eye.
