From Our Family to Yours

Maloney's Ocular Prosthetics is a third-generation family business with over 100 years of combined experience.

Our History

Close-up of an elderly man with glasses, smiling, wearing a light-colored blazer and a pink striped shirt.

His daughter, Maureen, joined the practice in 1976. Mr. Maloney retired for a second time in 1987, leaving the practice to his daughter, Maureen, and his son-in-law, Kevin Schou, the two Board Certified Ocularists who run Maloney's Custom Ocular Prosthetics today. Maureen and Kevin’s son, Michael, joined the practice after finishing his studies at Oregon State University in 2018. When it’s their turn to retire, Maureen and Kevin will pass the business on to Michael and his wife, Lexi.

Our founder, Bernard "Ben" A. Maloney, served as a surgical and dental technician during World War II. After serving in the South Pacific, the Veterans Administration selected him to train in ocularistry and anaplastology. Once he returned to Portland, Mr. Maloney became the Chief of the Restoration Clinic at the Veterans Hospital and the Director of the Prosthetics Clinic at the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, now known as Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU). Mr. Maloney worked for the VA and OHSU for 27 years until he retired in 1974. He traveled the South Pacific with his wife before returning to ocularistry and opening an ocular prosthetics lab at Good Samaritan Hospital in 1975.

  • BCO, FASO, FIAO, Ocularist and Co-Owner

Maureen started working with her father, Ben Maloney, in 1976. Maureen passed her National Examining Board of Ocularists exam in 1981 and received her Board Certified Ocularist (BCO) certification. In 2002, the American Society of Ocularists (ASO) awarded Maureen Fellow of the American Society of Ocularists (FASO). This fellowship is a lifelong distinction awarded to a member who has demonstrated high academic achievement and made significant contributions to the profession and the ASO. In 2015, Maureen was a founding member of the International Academy of Ocularisty. Today, she serves on the Board of Trustees and as the Admissions Chair.

Maureen and Kevin were married in Portland, Oregon, in October 1987. They welcomed their daughter, Katherine, in 1991 and their son, Michael, in 1994.

Maureen enjoys many hobbies, including golf, cooking, and quilting. She also loves traveling with her husband whenever their schedule allows. Along with the rest of her family, she is a Beaver Football fan.

  • BCO, FIAO, Ocularist and Co-Owner

Kevin graduated from a joint Foothill College and Stanford University program with a degree in Anaplastology and Ocularistry in June of 1980. After graduation, Kevin received his Board Certification from the American Society of Ocularists and moved back to his hometown of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where he opened his practice. In 1982, Kevin moved back to the West Coast to work in Los Angeles and opened a new ocularistry practice in San Francisco. After he and Maureen married in 1987, he moved to Portland to join Maloney’s Custom Ocular Prosthetics and sold his San Francisco practice to focus on their growing family and business.

Kevin was instrumental in forming the American Anaplastology Association, serving as President from 1988-1990. He still provides anaplastology services to patients around the world today. Kevin was an active member of the American Society of Ocularists, serving as Facilities chair from 1993-2010. Recognizing his hard work and dedication, the American Society of Ocularists awarded Kevin the Distinguished Service Award in 2004. Currently, Kevin is on the Board of Trustees of the International Academy of Ocularisty.

In addition to ocularistry and anaplastology, Kevin enjoys woodworking, traveling with his wife and family, and being an avid Beaver Football fan.

  • BS, Ocularist Apprentice

Michael began his ocularistry apprenticeship in July 2018, but he has been around ocularistry his entire life, as he is Kevin and Maureen's son. He graduated from Oregon State University, where he studied psychology and was an active member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He is now a Member in Training of the International Academy of Ocularists.

In his free time, Michael enjoys coaching lacrosse to help younger players develop their skills. He also enjoys snowboarding and spending time with his wife, Lexi, and their dog, Valkyrie.

Lexi joined the team in August 2024. Lexi can assist with insurance concerns, patient account questions, and appointment scheduling. She’s very excited to get to know you all, so say hello when you see her in the office!

Lexi married into the Schou family and is so grateful to be a part of the business family, too. Lexi graduated with a degree in Rhetoric & Media Studies from Lewis & Clark College in 2017. In her past work experience, she worked in fundraising at her college alma mater, flew around the world as a Delta flight attendant, and worked as the Marketing Director for the YMCA in Portland.
