The first appointment involves taking an impression of the orbit. This is a painless and short procedure. The material that is used is similar to that used by dentist’s for taking dental impressions. We will also complete a wax pattern fitting to achieve the proper lid curvature and iris location as well as paint the background color of your iris. This process usually takes approximately 2 hours.

After a 2-3 hour break, we will add the necessary details to your iris color and match the scleral (white) tones of the prosthesis with your companion eye. It is necessary for you to be present in order to duplicate closely your color detail. This process usually takes an additional hour.

A minimum of two days are usually required to complete the prosthesis. We will insert the prosthesis and take photographs for your records. We will also request a one-month follow-up appointment to make a final evaluation for comfort, fit, and cosmesis. More adjustments may be necessary and would be scheduled accordingly. We recommend you be seen every six months to clean, polish and restore the prosthesis to its original condition and comfort.
